Sergei Rebrov opened his goalscoring account as we completed an impressive
4-0 win against Finnish First Division outfit Tervarit on Saturday. Our
£11m summer capture from Dynamo Kiev strolled onto Stephen Carr’s cross and
clinically side-footed home the third goal after 64 minutes.
As well as Rebrov’s strike, there were plenty of plus points for manager
George Graham after the second leg of our three-match programme in
Scandinavia – not least in the shape of Les Ferdinand. He maintained his
good form after his injury hell with the opening goal after also scoring on
his comeback again Skelleftea on Wednesday.
Ferdinand showed aggression and desire throughout – just the ingredients
required to get to Chris Armstrong’s low cross and slide in the first goal
after 18 minutes. He also hit the post with a diving header in the first
half and twice went close with headers after the break.
It was a good day for our forward line. Armstrong also added to his goal on
Wednesday after burying a header following good work from Luke Young in the
23rd minute. And Steffen Iversen took his tour tally to three in two games
by nodding home Steffen Freund’s cross in the final seconds.
Freund also saw a top corner-bound shot clawed away by home keeper Jarni
Makila while Iversen twice and Tim Sherwood could have added to the
scoreline in the final five minutes.
There were a couple of scares for us, though, and Neil Sullivan had to be
at his best to save from Marko Maenpaa, Ismailia Jagne, and Esa Talala’s
close range efforts.
“I was very pleased with the team but we missed a few chances and could
have scored a few more goals,” said manager George Graham afterwards.
“Finishing is usually the last thing to come on these tours and we still
have a bit of work to do.”
